Thuso Mbedu studied at Pelham Primary School and Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School. After that, she got enrolled at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and studied Physical Theatre and Performing Arts Management. She graduated with honors in 2013. Additionally, while studying at the University of the Witwatersrand, she received the university council merit scholarship as well as a New York University summer program scholarship.
In 2012, she also attended the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City.

Also, her grandmother became her legal guardian after her parent’s demise.Thuso Mbedu was 4 years old when her mother died from a brain tumor.Between 2015 and 2017, she brought to life the character of Kitso Medupe in the soap opera Scandal!.From 2016 to 2017, she played the lead role of Winnie Bhengu (a sassy go-getter who dreams of marrying a rich and famous rugby player but is exiled to go live with her strict aunt in Bergville) in the television series Is’Thunzi. This performance won Thuso Mbedu the South African Film and Television Award for “Best Actress TV Drama”.
