Original story
The Nampa School District board is scheduled to meet Monday to discuss the possibility of closing schools in the district.
Like most of Idaho, Nampa saw considerable growth in population over the last decade or so. However, that does not translate to more students in the district. Enrollment in the Nampa School District in the 2013-2014 school year was 14,961. This school year was 13,246, a drop off of nearly 1,900 students.
Enrollment numbers are not the only challenge for the Nampa School District. The Facilities Condition Index (FCI) is an "Industry standard index used to track condition performance of buildings quantify risk.
The FCI provides a consistent condition measurement for a single, group or portfolio of buildings. The FCI is equal to renewal and repair costs over replacement costs.
Roughly 15% of Nampa School District facilities are about the sustainability target at fair or good ranges. The rest of the facilities fall below that, with more than 30% in the critical range. As buildings in the district, like Nampa High School, which was initially built in the 1950s, continue to age, the cost to maintain these facilities increases.
One of the recommendations before the board is to discontinue three buildings, repurpose three other buildings and redraw boundaries to allocate students to the remaining schools.
