Finding Unown in Pokemon Go is a surprisingly difficult task – especially if you’re a player who doesn’t usually get involved with in-game events.
While it might not seem like the most powerful or rarest ‘mon out there, it gives elusive Pokemon like Larvesta, Kecleon, and Zygarde a run for their money when it comes to getting caught. It’s hard to track down and even harder to find in Shiny form.
Here, we’ve gathered up top tips on how to get Unown in Pokemon Go – including the different forms that can be obtained and whether it’s possible to get every Unown as a Shiny in Pokemon Go, too.

How to get Unown in Pokemon Go
Technically, trainers can find Unown through wild encounters, but the odds of actually encountering one are incredibly slim, reportedly popping up in hard-to-access locations. As such it’s not a very reliable method to catch Unown – and it’s much better to track them down in events instead.

For example, certain Unown letters and symbols were featured encounters for all habitats during the New York, Madrid, and Sendai Go Fest 2024 events. Alternately, Unown sometimes appear in common events like 2023’s Psychic Spectacular, or even appear in special Egg events, too.
It’s best to keep an eye out for upcoming events to see if Unown is a featured encounter, rather than relying on pure luck. Make sure to keep up to date with our Pokemon Go event hub so you never miss out on the chance to add to your collection.

It’s also worth noting that Unown only takes up one Pokedex entry, despite having 28 forms (one for each letter of the alphabet, alongside a question mark and exclamation point).
Can Unown be Shiny in Pokemon Go?
Yes, Unown can be Shiny in Pokemon Go, but not all of its forms can be Shiny. Shiny Unown are easiest to obtain during special events, so keep an eye on the community calendar if there’s a particular form you want to add to your collection.
