As a volunteer in Projects Abroad's Shark Conservation project in Fiji you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, including diving, shark surveys, mangrove reforestation, and beach clean-ups. You will also be able to observe scientists catching and tagging juvenile sharks.
The first week of the project will focus on your diving course. If you do not have a certification, you will be trained on the PADI Open Water course. All High School Special volunteers will also take part in a Shark Conservation Diver Course.
The second week of the program will focus on scientific research, such as observing the scientists, helping with mangrove reforestation, assisting with beach clean-ups, and participating in a shark survey dive. You will also be able to go on an incredible shark feed dive.
The Shark Conservation Project in Fiji and our partner dive organization, Beqa Adventure Divers, are at the forefront of shark protection in Fiji. Their safety record on shark dives is 100%. There have been no shark related accidents or injuries to any divers on their shark dive.
